About
Mr Jonathan Richardson graduated with honours in surgery from the University of Birmingham Medical School in 2005. After excelling as a junior doctor, he secured a highly competitive run-through surgical training post, gaining broad experience in both general and specialist colorectal surgery across the West Midlands.
In 2017, Jonathan was appointed Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. His clinical interests span the full range of colorectal and general surgery, with a particular focus on colorectal cancer and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgical techniques. As a high-volume colorectal cancer resection surgeon, he delivers excellent patient outcomes and undertakes complex surgery for advanced disease and patients with significant underlying conditions. He is a core member of the Colorectal Cancer Multidisciplinary Team, Clinical Lead for Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS), and Audit Lead for the Surgical Directorate.
Jonathan has a strong academic profile. He was Chief Investigator of a landmark translational research study on systemic neutrophil function in colorectal cancer patients, presenting the findings internationally and winning the prestigious European Society for Surgical Research Best Clinical Research Award. He was awarded an MD from the University of Birmingham, and his research has been published and widely cited in peer-reviewed journals. Currently, he serves as Principal Investigator and Co-investigator on multiple NIHR portfolio studies and is among the top recruiters to clinical trials at University Hospitals Birmingham.
Alongside his clinical and research work, Jonathan is deeply committed to education. He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from the University of Dundee and is Lead Undergraduate Surgical Tutor and Senior Clinical Examiner at the University of Birmingham, where he is also an Honorary Associate Professor. He is a GMC-accredited Named Educational Supervisor, providing guidance to Foundation Year Doctors, Specialty Trainees, and Specialist Registrars. In addition, he is Faculty Lead for the Royal College of Surgeons Basic Surgical Skills course and teaches on the Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient course.
Outside of medicine, Jonathan balances a busy professional life with a large family. He lives in Sutton Coldfield with his wife and six children, enjoying an active lifestyle of walking, running, and swimming. He continues to compete in veteran’s football and also coaches junior football locally.
